Character
Name: Aoba Kuronuma
Canon: Durarara!!
Age: Most likely 15; he's a Freshman.
History: Here. I'm taking Aoba from mostly after Volume 6, though I'm up to date up to Volume 9 on summaries. The gap in translations is pretty tough!!
Reason for Playing: I suppose he would really have a lot to gain out of making some people unhappy. If there's some things to gain from this sort of thing, well then... he's all game. That and he probably is going to need to help his failing senpai.
Personality:
Aoba comes off as a young student, very bright with eyes sparkling. An innocent boy, no less--showing respect and much politeness towards his elders, namely Mikado. He even seems to have a sense of curiosity that rivals that of a child's--hell, he even has a childlike face to match these antics of his.
Aoba is also extremely forward, not at all a shy sort of boy. He approaches Mikado, asking him if he's in DOLLARS first thing, which catches Mikado clearly off guard. He even asks straight up whether or not Anri and Mikado are dating. When Mikado exclaims that they are just friends, Aoba muses that Anri is still single, and further queries whether he can make it on the waitlist to date her. Mikado gets the impression that his ease in asking such a thing is much more natural than Masaomi could have done, which can say a lot about Aoba.
"I know, you want to keep it a secret, right? Don't worry, I'm great at keeping secrets! It's like what I do!"
However if he feels as though he has upset someone, he comes out and tends to apologize, or be very considerate towards their despair. Aoba comes off as the type to feel troubled over people, he even gets a little stutter too. Aoba also seems to be really scared and cautious, as he retracted his words because he thought that Mikado was actually a scary guy since he is in Dollars. This is very much a way to get someone to trust him more.
Even beyond this, let's just remind you, he is always smiling... He is able to conceal his true emotions and thoughts with a smile, even if he is doubting something. Alarmed emotions only show briefly on his face, should something bad happen. Yes, this is all to people to which he'd find extremely useful and worth paying special attention to, or even someone he can manipulate in his favor. All just so he would be seen as someone really trustworthy... and honest. A devil's smile.
Let's just put it out there that Celty describes him as a "scheming bastard", and that he is kind of like Izaya. Oh yes, this little boy is trouble, to really be compared to one of the biggest instigators in the series. Noooot that you need to know, anyway. ☆
In a regular classroom atmosphere, with many people, Aoba is nonchalant--primarily because he really doesn't care about the fellow students around him. In short, he's indifferent to things that he has nothing to gain from, or even nothing to lose. Yet it is because he had nothing to do with the bullying situation for Kururi (which was really due to her sister, Mairu), he spoke up for her, only because he was simply delivering an answer to a question that was asked. Though he sold out the girls, and they became flustered and angry, he wasn't bothered by it, because he was on no one's side to begin with. When it comes to people that don't have any effect on his life, he really doesn't matter if he angers them or not. And like before, he's straightfoward, so when these girls began to confront him over his actions... Aoba went as far as to insult the girl's breast sizes.
"Ah, hello? It's me...... It looks like I'm now sort of the main character in some horribly made porn."
Oh, on the topic of his more true personalities, he is also a lot smarter than he lets on--he even knew from the start that Mikado founded Dollars, after all (as well as his address, mind you). That, and even reading the novel, you notice that Aoba is always thinking, always pondering things. In fact, he even thinks a lot before acting. Or while acting. At the height of his thoughts, he even seems to needlessly go on to wonder the existence of bullying. In his words, while you could come up with a thousand explanations, it's "whatever", because the bullies aren't going to stop, because they're doing it out of pleasure. They won't stop if they're not getting enough pleasure in bullying the weak. And for those who look on, it's not that they fear retaliation if they try to stop the bullying, it's that they are satisfied with the fact that it isn't them. Aoba too though understands that it is a crowded planet, so there must be saints that really are willing to help others. To him, it'd be weird if there wasn't any.
You see, he's pretty observant with things like these. He's even observant enough to a thin thread attached to a motorcycle, observant enough to guess Mikado's character (even if, in the end, he underestimated him after all). He is understanding of situations very well, whether or not he actually has a care for it. Smack dab in the middle of these situations, he still shines as well. Aoba tries to keep himself calm through every situation, even when presented with alarming information... along with situations where he gets two kisses suddenly from the twins Mairu and Kururi, as thanks for speaking up against the bullies.
But this kind of intelligence and levelheadedness, need it be reminded to the audience one last time, is not used for the good of the world. Aoba's self centered. It's all about the gain. And he is cunning in doing things in getting his gain... or even cunning enough to get others to do things for his own gain. He knows how to try to manipulate others, or use others as leverage to get people to do as he wishes. Or even use pretty words to make the person think that they're really getting all the gain from something. Aoba is precisely the one to push things on to others, using people to get things done his way...
But! He is still smiling.
"Why
…why did you attack those people in Saitama
…why did you do it
…"
"They ruined my Ikebukuro trip with Mikado-sempai and Anri-sempai. I was just venting my anger …or is that not good enough an explanation?"
Even if things start to go downhill, and his truer colors begin to get exposed, which are hardly angel-like at all... his smile still seems to hold. You know, Aoba can be outright ruthless. Aoba isn't one to have any morals, stealing isn't even above him. He's also extremely cruel, willing to mock others and can be very bitter with the things that he says. Sometimes, he isn't afraid to outright provoke people. Then for someone as childlike as him, someone who looks so innocent, even he can be extremely intimidating. His tone can grow dark, and though his expression should change to something particularly menacing, really, his ever smiling expression always stays the same.
But the one person he hates? Aoba chose to make Izaya the one person he hates the most. He's like a rival to Aoba, though this was really more declared by Izaya himself, since they were really so alike. When it comes to him, his tone decidually changes, much to that of an adults. A considerable change from his normal childlike aura he gives off. The expression of his face disappears, but it is different from his nonchalance to his fellow classmates. This really seems to be the closest thing to Aoba being mad. He doesn't even hold back in telling Izaya that he wished he could just die already.
No, no... it's not just Izaya that he hates. In the very end, his entire thing about him... is that he hates humanity.
And this is what really truly separates him from the apparent reminiscence of Izaya in the first place.
“Please leave it to us, My Captain☆”
Abilities: Nothing much, really. Aside from having a knack for stealing and feeling no guilt in it, and having an equally immoral knack for fire and molotovs... I guess, he has a crazy tolerance against pain. Aoba chose to fight against showing any ounce of pain at his stabbed hand, only freezing in fear at seeing Mikado's change in expression just three seconds later after stabbing him... and then just bandaging up his hand. Other than that, if you're looking for something really out of the ordinary, you will have nothing of that with little Aoba.
Sample: Here. This is really the one documented thing on Dreamwidth I got with him, where it grew to where it'd probably be an example of how he reacts to Overjoy's setting.
